Like I don’t have enough to do to keep me busy…
I ran into an article about starting daylily seeds and thought I would give it a try. My peroxide was a little old so I don’t know that it had any effect whatsoever but the water is still clear and free of slimy stuff so perhaps it did.
In a nutshell… Last year I harvested some seeds from my Stellas as they ripened. Its easy to tell when they are ready as the little seed pods open to reveal black seeds inside. I gathered the pods and put them in a box on my back porch. The porch is protected and heated somewhat, so it stays about 15F higher than the outside. The lowest it got out there this winter was the high 20s. The seeds sat there till March 9 when I placed them in the water/H2O2 mix. I used more liquid than the above link showed. I didn’t realize it till I had already placed the seed in the jar and didn’t want to risk pouring them down the drain. All in all there were probably about 25 seeds. This jar was placed in a cupboard in the kitchen where it was kept dark and in the high 60s/low 70s.
Fast forward to March 17, just 8 days later and 5 have sprouted! I’ve planted these 5 in cups of soil under the lights down stairs. I can’t wait to see what I end up getting.
Very cool. I will have to try this, too.
Jenn,
I’d be interested to know how they turn out if you decide to try it.
I noticed tonight a few more of mine have sprouted. I had planted the others but nothing has come out of the soil yet. I may wait and let this next batch get some green on them before I plant them.
I am getting a little concerned with the 5 sprouted seeds I planted last week. They are still not showing through the soil, hopefully they are busy putting out roots.
I did notice that another 8-10 seeds have sprouted in the jar. I am going to let them get larger as per the directions on the site above before planting them out.
Just came across your site about propagation I have collected seeds and would like to try your method. How much peroxide and water do I need?. I like to experiment and would be very gratified if I could propagate a few plants. Thanks
I’m also interested in propagating daylilies from seeds. What is the ‘recipe’ for the water? How much peroxide to how much water? The page for the ‘site above’ has already expired. Thanks!
can you let us all in on how your success was propagating these lily’s
Hey, what happened?
I saw your propagation method, but like another reader, I did not know the recipe for the water/peroxide mixture. Would love to give it a try. Thank you.
Sorry, it appears that the link I had originally posted (with the recipe) points to a page that no longer exists. Fortunately we have the way back machine http://web.archive.org/web/20060212033717/http://daylily6.tripod.com/Step_1.html It looks like the ratio is 15ml of 3% peroxide to 1 litre of pure water (distilled preferably).
That would be abt 3 teaspoons peroxide and almost 4 1/4 cups water.
As far as the success/failure… They did sprout and were going fine, though still small, when I ended up getting sick and letting them go. I may try it again this year. If anyone trys this I would love to hear about your experiences with it.
where do i get peroxide from?
Pretty much anywhere that sells medical supplies including grocery stores, pharmacies etc. Just look for Hydrogen Peroxide.
where do i get peroxide,lol
hey about that link that you there i know its old. but could you update it since its working but i cannot see the images and i would really like to see them. theres an error in the page. please let me know if this can be done
Dionlys,
The link in the article above is not mine but is from a site that no longer exists. A couple of comments up from this one I posted another link (the webarchive.org address). The Internet Archive is a site that archives old web sites on the net so that you can see past versions of pages. It can come in very handy if you are looking for pages that no longer exist. Unfortunately, they very often do not include photos, probably for storage reasons.
Interesting, i have to try this. I mostly use division for propagating. Article here:
Daylily Propagation
i used plain water with the same results of sprouts after 3-7 days. I planted and have “baby” day lilies. It is hard to wait to see what the blooms will be as some of the websites say it could take up to 2 years.
