We must have had quite a storm while I was gone last night watching the May Festival Chorus rehearsal. We have one medium sized branch in the lawn and lots of things were leaning in the same direction. According to the bucket sitting on the back porch we had over an inch of rain. Nothing really looks any worse for the wear though.
The Garlic and shallots that I planted last November look great. The photo is of the shallots. If every shoot produces a bulb I’ll have more than I know what to do with from that half pound I planted. The rain we’ve had this spring has kept them moist and they are situated in soil that I mixed a LOT of shredded leaves into last fall. The entire plot is virtually lacking weeds which is a nice benefit.
I am worried about the multiplier onions though. I noticed about 1/3 of them had sent up flowers. I plucked those off asap. I read somewhere that if onions go to seed (which can be brought on by temperatures) they will not produce bulbs. This will be yet another experiment. It may be that these onions are best planted in the spring here.
The beans I planted last weekend aren’t up yet. No surprise there, this has been a very cool couple of weeks. My tomatoes and peppers are sitting there looking at me like ‘yeah…right’.
Speaking of multiplier onions, I’m a quiet lurker (mostly) but I was wondering if you would be willing to set up some sort of garden trade for a few of those? I don’t have much that isn’t edible to offer, but I love onions and cook with them, and the thought of multiplier onions just seems to work for me. Either that, or point me in a direction where I might be able to find/order them.
