Just the other day I was saying that I hadn’t seen any of the common Black and Yellow Garden Spider (Argiope sp.) this year. This morning while pulling some weeds I found two in the broccoli. Yeahhhh!! I actually had to leave a couple of weeds (after cutting them back as far as I could) as each of their webs were attached at one point. These are still fairly small or, they could be the males which are smaller. No egg sacs yet and both spiders were about the same size (about 1/2-3/4″ body size, 1 1/2″ overall). It is believed that the zigzag pattern in the webbing is to warn birds and small mammals that the web is there. It works with people too. lol

I’m going to have to start looking more closely at the spiders in my house and yard. I’ve always known that spiders are a gardeners friend, but I never thought about there being different kinds of spiders and webs. I’ll have to add that to my list: birdwatching, butterfly watching and now spider watching!
That is one of the best pics of have seen in a long time. What kind of camera do you use?
Thank you. Its a little Nikon Coolpix 775 2.1 megapixel digital. It has a great macro function. The trick is getting it to focus on a small area of the screen. I’ve found that by orienting the subject at an angle it will focus on small areas more easily. That wasn’t necessary on this pic as the zigzag on the web was large enough to get the camera’s attention.
I dream about getting a digital slr. A friend of mine has one and takes awesome pics. Is that what you are using too? Your pictures are stunning. The colors are so vibrant.
I have never found a spider so beautiful before.
We are having fun with our Coolpix macro function.
