My Catawissa Walking Onions are walking and my multiplier Potato Onions are multiplying. I decided to try some different types of onions this year so I ordered several varieties online. I ordered the Potato Onions from julie7906 on Ebay and the Catawissa Onions from Garden City Seeds and was very pleased with both.
Catawissa Onions are like Egyptian Walking Onions in that they multiply by forming small bulbs at the top of thier ‘leaves’. On mine, one leaf, usually the tallest, forms a cluster of bulbs. As these bulbs grow they form their own leaves and eventually they become so heavy that they fall over. They root where they contact the soil and spread by ‘walking’ like this. I’ve not tried them yet but I understand they can have a very strong onion flavor. I’ve also read that the bulblets are often pickled. I won’t have near enough to do anything with this year other than save them for replanting.
The Yellow Heirloom Potato Onions produce anywhere from 2 to 12 onions for each one you plant. Larger bulbs yield more onions. These are just starting to bulb up. They don’t get nearly as large as the onions we get at the local grocery but I like the idea of a continuous supply of onions. From what I have read most people eat the larger ones and keep the smaller ones for replanting. I tried some of the greens this spring and they were really good chopped fine and added to an omlet.
We had some of these Catawissa or Egyptian Walking onions in our garden and have been wondering what in the world they were. We were using them like onions but still wondered. Thank you so so so much for answering our identity question.
