Last night, at just about sunset, we had some visitors. At least I hope they were visitors. I was outside weeding the sweet potatoes when I saw what I thought at first was a cat run past the shed toward the backyard. One of the little rabbits had gone under that shed earlier so I ran over to make sure the ‘cat’ wasn’t going for a rabbit dinner. What I saw was not a cat but the second of two small raccoons scampering up one of the large sassafras trees. Two little faces looking down from a branch. (It was too dark and far away to get a decent pic with the digital and my 35mm didn’t have filmd so no pic, sorry) My next thought was to keep an eye out for mom so I backed off and watched from a distance. I never did see mom though as small as they were she was probably nearby. At one point I was on the lawn and one of the little ones came down the tree and up into one of the huge maples across the yard. It looked like he was digging for bugs as he used his paws to dig around in the rotten section and found something tasty. A little bit later down he came and he walked past, within about 10-15 feet from me. He didn’t see me till I made a noise then she shot back up the sassafras tree. This morning they were gone. I’ve read that their range can be up to 1 1/2 miles so I am hoping that they were visitors from the nearby woods/pond area over the hill and not residents of the under my shed animal motel.
