As I have stated in previous posts, a couple of years ago I purchased two figs from two different places. Both were labeled as Brown Turkey figs. Neither had fruit at the time and one didn’t have any leaves so I had no reason to believe that they were anything but what they were labeled. Since I don’t know what they are I am calling them by the color of their immature fruit, purple and green.
Immature fruit of the ‘purple’ fig
Ripe fruit of the ‘purple’ fig
Leaves and immature fruit of the ‘green’ fig.
I should note that the purple fig’s eye doesn’t open or if it does it barely does so. The ‘green’ fig has a sweeter taste and the fruit is much larger than the ‘purple’.
From what I have read, I would say that there is a good chance that the ‘green’ fig is actually the brown turkey. Anyone disagree? Any idea what the ‘purple’ fruited fig is?
After having done some research, I believe that the ‘purple’ fig may be a Petite Negri and the ‘green’ fig is a Vern’s Brown Turkey. The look of the Vern’s isn’t like a typical Brown Turkey but the photos and descriptions of Vern’s I have found lead me to believe that is what I have.
recently I bought a fig cutting called “banana fig” and I am trying to learn more about it. I have no idea what shape it may be. It may take several years to be old enough to produce fruit. Figs do grow here and I have three different ones already. The problem is the wild birds, the deer, the chickens, my dogs, etc. dorthea
Dorthea,
Congrats on your new fig. I learned lots from the Fig Forum at Garden Web
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/fig/ There was another site too but darn if I can find it right now. There were tons of pics and lots of info on growing. We have critters here too but fortunately so far nothing has touched the figs other than the yearly rust that is easily treated with organic fungicide.
There is a site which has a much information about figs at http://figs4fun.com
They have a broad list going. Hope this helps.
