I got the greatest birthday present this year. My daughter and partner bought me a Palm T|X. I LOVE this thing. It has a 312Mhz processor, 128 megs of memory, will take up to a 2 gig sd card, 480×320 display (portrait or landscape), builtin wireless for syncing and the internet, bluetooth, will play movies, mp3s, sync with my calendar and todo list as well as my address book, will run MS Excel, Word and Powerpoint and PDF files, has a program that will download the next week’s tv listings and remind me when a show I want to watch is coming on and…best of all will run a program called Quick News. QN lets you view rss feeds of your favorite blogs, news sites etc. I can sync it up in the morning with a couple of key presses without even having to connect it to the computer and it will download all of the latest posts to my favorite blogs. I can browse these on the way in to work (no I’m not driving ;-)), when I am waiting in line etc. It will let me flag posts, email them and, if I am connected to a wireless network, post comments to them.
Bloggers, if you haven’t done so set your blogs to display the entire post in rss. Before getting this little gem I rarely had time to read my favorite blogs. Now, when the rss feed is more than a sentence or two I can keep up with the latest happenings in blog land and still have a life ;-). I am not sure why, but some blogs (mine included) will only show a marker to an image while others will actually show the images. I am working on fixing that just as soon as I figure out why it is happening that way.
Update: 2/26/05
It seems that the picture problem was due to several problems including bad image links, some pics being very large and the software needing an update. I made the developer aware of the problem and once he figured out what was he had a beta version released within hours. Talk about speedy service! The next release of QN should have this taken care of.
Hey look! It’s the Garden Djinn!
I’ll have to check that setting. I have no idea what it’s toggled to.
I think it’s already good. Let me know if you have problems, yes?
Great present! Happy belated birthday!
I gotta get me one of those! And happy belated birthday.
Hmmm…I see Garden Voices on there, but I don’t see you on the Garden Voices feed. I’ll try adding you again.
Thanks all, for the b’day wishes. I believe that when I am 87 I will still be just as excited about birthdays. I refuse to dye my hair and welcome each wrinkle. By golly I’ve earned every one of them and will wear them proudly. Part of me is looking forward to my golden years. You can get away with so much more when you are 80 than when you are 44. I am going to be one of those wild grannies lol. Look out 2042.
Jenn, its working great. Glad you got it fixed.
Roses, not sure what you mean about the feed. I can get the GV feed are you talking about KG being on the GV end of things?
I did notice that the GV feed is only showing feeds through Feb 5. Is it only updated once a month? If GV is taking votes consider this my vote for more frequent updates. Its one of the few feeds where the pictures actually display in my TX, I’d love to be able to get more frequent updates.
I meant that your blog was not showing up on our newsfeed. I fixed that. I update the page twice a day except on Fridays when I have my Master Gardener class in the morning after working all night. I’m usually so exhausted that I fall into bed when I get home and update when I get up in the evening.
Roses,
Ok I understand. The feed I was talking about is the GV rss feed used by the news readers. It is the “subscribe to garden voices” link just above the contributors names on the GV page. http://voices.gardenweb.com/index.xml If you look at the top where it says last build date, it only has the posts up through Feb 5th. Is the rss feed no longer being updated?
I took cuttings from an old overgrown blueberry bush and planted them in some potting soil. Prior to planting them, I dipped the cut stem into some hormone rooting powder. Now the question….I live in Pa. Some of these cuttings are getting nice light green leaves. I have them inside in my enclosed porch. Do I keep them inside until spring, put them in the garage or plant the cuttings outside before the snow blows. We are having rather mild weather in November thus far, but before long it will be very cold. Please advise as they are drawing little knats and I don’t want bugs inside the house! Also…I bought four blueberry bushes. Do I shield them with burlap for the winter or are they winter hardy when they are young?
Put the cuttings on the roof next to the chimney. The heat from the chimney will keep them alive, and the snows will harden them off. Left on the roof until July or August should produce an abundance of blew berries which can be collected at the bottom on your rainspout…just place a large container there with some milk in it. When full, you can add your favorite cerial and have a ready-made, delicious breakfast. Good luck.
