The Brown Turkey fig and Arctic Kiwi cuttings I took several weeks ago are coming along nicely. No roots yet. The media is heated to about 70F and the basement is about 55F. The plastic covers keep the humidity in and the temps a little higher than the ambient air temp.
As shown in the photos both are leafing out. A couple of the figs are outgrowing their plastic covers. I topped a few to slow them down a bit. I don’t expect roots on either for several weeks at the earliest. I’ve never tried rooting either one and have limited success with any hardwood cuttings so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
The long slender plant that looks like a blade of grass is actually a date palm. Last year a coworker shared some dates he had purchased from California. I kept the seeds from mine and placed them in a moist paper towel in a ziplock baggie. This went on the top of my monitor making sure not to block the vent holes. It took about 3 weeks for sproutage. The root originates in the middle of the elongated seed. Once the roots got about 1/2″ long I planted them in soil. The pot rec’d bottom heat and the soil was kept moist. It took about a month or more for any top growth to show. I recently separated these (6) out into individual cups and placed them in the potting bench under lights. They are about 8″ tall now.
