Let the orders begin…

Up till this weekend I had not ordered anything garden-wise for this coming gardening season. I picked up what seeds I’ve planted so far locally. There is a Southern States nearby and it is my favorite place to get beans, spinach, beets etc. You get a huge amount of seed for next to nothing. They are a farm products store, I’ve even picked up vaccinations for my pets there.

Yesterday I ordered a brown turkey fig. I’ve been meaning to get one for several years but Spring seems to pass me by before I sit down and do it. This year though I found one at Miller Nurseries for a good price. Though they are listed as being hardy to zone 5, I am going to attempt to grow this one in a container and move it onto the back porch for winter at least till it gets too big.

I was also eyeing some elderberries though I am not sure I would really use them with all of the other jam making berries I have around here. I do want to put out 2 grape vines this year. I have a small space I gained from narrowing the june bearing strawberry patch when I started the everbearing patch last year. It should fit 2 grape vines and their trellis nicely. I’ll probably try to pick those up locally unless I run into a great deal online.

I am hoping to pick up some black bamboo this spring. I am a zone north of its limit but I am hoping that a protected spot and mulch will help it adapt. More than likely it won’t spread too much as I am guessing it die back every couple of years at the very least.
