How are the darn birds getting in the basement? and why we aren’t having mulberry jam this year…

Well the title says it all doesn’t it? I had these big plans to make some mulberry jam this year. I picked the berries and was in the process of washing them and getting those little stems out of the end. I was standing at the sink as T. went downstairs into the basement. I saw something out of the corner of my eye, turned around just in time to see Ripley’s back end tearing out of the kitchen. Ripley is our moose dog. I thought he must have gotten into some big trouble downstairs as he usually doesn’t go lay down nearly that quickly even when he has been scolded pretty good. Just about then, in from the living room flew a bird with Ripley on it’s heels. It startled me to say the least as it isn’t every day one sees a bird flying right at them in their kitchen. Well there went the mulberries down the sink, on the floor, into the drain board. The next 10 minutes was spent dodging mulberries and chasing this damn bird back down into the basement where somehow it got in (we still haven’t figured out how and this is the second bird this year). I grabbed a towel out of the dirty clothes and was able to get the bird and turn it loose outside with nothing more than some ruffled feathers. As he flew away he was very vocal at his disgust with the whole incident.

Since mulberries don’t ripen all at once I had to wait a few days to pick some more. At about the time more were ripe the rabbits showed up so I’ve been busy with them. No mulberry jam this year

A Bird in Hand…

Friday evening I was in the process of planting out some zinnias in a new flower bed I had tilled earlier. On the way over I almost stepped on a little bird (a sparrow I believe) that was enjoying the spray leaking from the hose on the ground. It was one of the many that inhabit the yard this time of year. Since we don’t have any cats and the Rip the moose dog is always leashed, they do quite well hobbling around the yard before they can fly. This little guy didn’t seem to be bothered by me planting away. He even let me pick him up and carry him around for a little bit. He watched me work for a bit and then was off exploring parts unknown.

This morning when I woke up I heard the familiar baby bird squawk as I opened the front door. There it was (or one that looks just like it) sitting on the ground up against the front door. A picture was allowed before flying off into the cedar tree across the yard. I think I have a new friend
