Onions and a few shallots

August 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Potato onions and shallots.

Last year around Thanksgiving, I planted some newly purchased Potato Onions and a few shallots I had left over from a previous batch. They are fairly small but they were in a spot that didn’t get as much sun as they would like so I am pleased at the outcome as it is. The onions are a multiplier type and do tend to be on the small side anyway. Theoretically, once you have a stash of these onions you won’t need to purchase any more. I dug these a couple of days ago and they are drying on the table for a few days. I will keep the largest to replant again this fall.

It is supposed to rain tonight so the onions came in. As I was topping them and cleaning them up a bit I found a few with onion maggots. This isn’t the first time I have run into them. The year I grew leeks I found a number of them infested. Fortunately, this year I lost less than a dozen bulbs total.

I need to investigate the life cycle of the insect to see at what point I can do something, if anything. I have read where some people use row covers. Will post what I find.
