About 3 months ago I planted the cuttings that I had taken from both plants last fall. They had spent the winter in a ziplock back in the veggie tray of the fridge. They went into moist soil with no rooting hormone, heat or anything. They cups were kept in the milk crates and left in the shade. The past month or so they have been eased into the sun where they are now getting about 5 hours a day. Every one of them rooted. Not a single loss. I’ve been slowly finding homes for them. I really didn’t expect to end up with so many making it but am glad they did. Now to find them some homes.
A coup of years ago I purchased what were supposed to be 2 Brown Turkey Figs from two different suppliers, one local and one via the Internet. Looking at the fruit below it appears that at least one is mislabeled.
I’ve scoured the net and I’ve seen photos of brown turkey figs that appear quite dark and others that appear lighter. The green fruit above will end up with more color than it has now (green/brown/gold) while the darker of the two will get quite purple and be much smaller. The mature leaves are a bit different too. The purple variety has more angular leaves while the green variety has more rounded leaves. Anyone have any ideas?
I just stumbled upon your website. i am not sure when you posted that proposition about the fig trees, but if the offer is still up, i would love one!! please email me and let me know. thanks
Wow, I would also love a fig tree! I’ve been eyeing them on ebay for months now. And you’re proof they can actually work here in Kentucky!
I’ll take two, they’re small…hehe
75042 is my zip, lemmie know how much to ship. Do you PayPal??
A good place to look is http://www.figs4fun.com
Wow adoptees. Cool.
I have enough left for 1 per person either the greenish or the purple fruited. I would be a little leery of shipping these in the heat of the summer though. Once they go dormant though they should ship fine.
If anyone is around the Cincinnati area and would like to pick one up sooner that can be arranged too. I checked the shipping and if the box weights under a pound and is shipped priority it should be about $5.00 to ship. Without the leaves and soil these would probably fit into one of the small 6inch boxes without much trouble.
If you want me to try and ship them in the summer I can but can’t guarantee they will make it ok. As it is they require daily watering in their small cups. If it were me I would wait till they go dormant or pick one up in person.

I do grow them here but do bring them into a covered, ever so slightly heated porch during the winter. It gets down into the mid 20s on a regular basis during the coldest part of the winter.
Tom
I do have a paypal acct and thank you for the link. I will check it out.
If you still have a baby fig tree available – I would absolutley love to adopt!! Would prefer the purplish one but would be happy to have either! My Daddy lived in south Louisianna and some of my fondest memories are of picking figs and then, of course, eating them. Let me know – we may be coming to the Cin. area this week.
Tammy, I’ll drop you an email to arrange for local pickup.
i’m up for one to be shipped now. lemme know via email if you still have one and tell me where to send the moola. purple i choose, but whatever you have left.
sincerely,
nichole
Nichole,
Check your email.
I just stumbled on your site, and read the figs giveaways. I know that I am too late, but can I please get a cutting at the end of the season, before the the tree goes dormant? I would like the brown turkey. I will pay for shipping. If that is possible I will send my email address.
Lemongrass. Unfortunately both plants were labeled as Brown Turkey. I’ve posted in fig forums and asked others who grow figs about possible identification. So far I have heard that yes the ‘green’ fig is BT but the purple is not. I’ve heard that neither are BT but that the ‘green’ may be Brunswick and the ‘purple’ Petite Negra.
The ‘purple’ figs are accounted for but I can send you a ‘green’ one (my guess is that it is the BT) once it goes dormant if you like. Email me at kerry at kerrysgarden dot u s
Kerry,
Do you think that the green turkey fig could possibly have been a mislabeled white Kadota fig? Is the inside of the fruit different between the two? If the Kadota is whiter inside that it is probably a white fig. They are excellent and make a nice contrasting dish. Thank you so much for the idea of starting figs. I am going to give it a try this year. Do I need to wait for the plants to go dormant and is it necessary for them to spend time in the frig? I know we do this with our apple cuttings.
Pamela, there are some inside fruit pics here http://www.kerrysgarden.us/2008/09/09/help-with-fig-identification/ Does this look like a Kadota? I had ended up going with a Vern’s BT for the ‘green’ one.
Yes I wait till they have lost all of their leaves to do cuttings. I have to put them on the back porch for the winter so when the temps start getting down into the mid to high 20s at night I give them a trim and bring them in. The cuttings are left out for a day or two to harden off on the ends then put in plastic ziplocks and stored in the crisper drawer till spring. Whether or not this is necessary I have no clue. It is the only way I’ve done it and I’ve had great success so far. It really wouldn’t do me any good to try to plant the cuttings in the fall as they would have to come inside anyway. This way I don’t have to fool with them till spring when I can set them outside.

You can more about this?
