Planting…

May 10th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Tomatoes: 6 Jetsetter (determinate, 64 days) and 7 Celebrity (determinate, 67 days) These and the Big Beef (indeterminate, 73 days) I planted yesterday and the Florida Petite (determinate. 40 days) and Florida Basket (determinate. 70 days) I have in containers are from the seed I purchased at Tomato Growers Supply. I’ve always been pleased with their seed though this year the germination on the Florida Petite wasn’t anywhere close to what I would have expected. I think I may have had about 20% germination. I will try them again next year to see if I get any better results. The Mr. Stripey (indeterminate 60 days) I planted yesterday and an unk (lost the tag) grape tomato that also went in the ground today came from a local garden center.

Eggplant: 4 Ichiban (61 days) and 5 Black beauty (80 days)

Peppers: 2 Jalapeno and 2 Cayenne

Zucchini: 1 hill Black Beauty that I purchased and put into a pot several weeks ago.

Cucumber: Spacemaster – seeded about 8 hills into the garden and 10 cells into small temporary containers. I picked this seed up from a local Southern States.

Flowers: Today for lunch Eric and I took a trip to a local garden center and I picked up a blackeyed susan vine (Thunbergia alata). I planted all 4 plants into one of the flower beds to give some color and shade the ground. I’ve never grown this before so I am not sure how it will do here.

I planted a black eyed susan vine for the first time last year and it was a REAL winner. Crawled it’s way up a trellis in my garden and gave a beautiful show until the first frost.

Thanks for the info. My friend recommended the plant. I’ve never grown it but am looking forward to trying it. Do you save the seed from yours? I’m hoping mine will trail on the ground and temporarily fill up a new bed for the summer while the other goodies get established.
