Brrrrr

April 5th, 2007 · No Comments

The 70+ weather we had been having has brought out pretty much everything over the past couple of weeks. The currants are preparing to bloom, the blueberries already are, the blackberry and raspberries have a good 4-5 inches of new growth but no buds yet. The grapes are on about their third leaf. Last night it got down below freezing and we are scheduled to have temps as low as 20 over the next several evenings. I covered the two grapes that weren’t yet trellised with boxes as well as one small Darlow’s Enigma rose. The rose got some added straw in the box but by the time I got home last night to cover the grapes it was getting dark. I did good to get the boxes on the grapes at all. The one that was growing on the fence received no protection. I just planted them last spring so I don’t yet know how much damage this will do to them or if it will kill them outright. I read that temps in the mid 20s can cause 90% damage at this stage so I am not very hopeful at this point. Most of the container stuff that I could fit onto the back porch is there including the Kiwi that is starting to bloom and obviously the figs. When I walked out to the car this morning the currants were drooping at the tips. I didn’t get a chance to look at anything else. I’m not sure what the eventual outcome will be. Think warm thoughts.
