We have some very old silver maple trees on our street. According to the arborist that came to remove several of the trees in my neighbor’s yard, about 100 years old. Now I am the last person to advocate the removal of trees just because and certainly not ones this old but a number of these trees are in pretty poor shape. I don’t believe they are diseased but they are definately showing the battle scars from the multiple cuttings to keep them out of the power lines. You can count on at least a couple of branches falling during a storm, sometimes very large branches. Two of these large old maples were taken out of the yard next door last week. When I got home on Friday I noticed a pile of chips not far from where a tree stood that morining. I promptly went over and ask the workers what their plans were for the pile. Fastforward about 30 minutes and there is a pile of next year’s mulch in my backyard. This is good because the pile I got two summers ago will be gone this season.
Today I planted out the two remaining Red Lake Currant cuttings I had rooted last year. They went into a mostly shady area and I used the last of the worm compost from the last harvest for them. I’ll need to clean out another worm bin within the next month. That should be just in time for some of the container stuff that will go out. Today I also got the 6 or 7 Red Twig Dogwoods out of the cups and into the ground. They are so pretty in the winter with their red stems. There is so much more I need to get out of containers. The basket willow cuttings that were rooted last year are still in large cups, they need to be planted. Problem is I don’t have the paper that listed which species I have. They are separated but till I can get a better idea of what I have they will have to wait. I dropped an email to the person I purchased them from. Hopefully she has records because I don’t seem to be able to keep mine straight. There are also some asparagus still in pots that need to go into the ground. I started these from seed a couple of years ago. I need the large container for one of the two mini nectarine trees I ordered from Stark yesterday. I had been waiting for these to go on sale and I rec’d the flyer in the mail yesterday. $15 each. I also ordered two elderberry from Miller as they were on sale for $3-4 each.
