Currants – First Harvest

June 19th, 2006 · 4 Comments

Red Lake Currants

The first harvest of Red Lake Currants is officially over. I ended up with about 4 cups of berries from two plants. This was their first year bearing, I just purchased them last spring and they spent last year in 3 gallon pots. I froze them with the plan of making some jelly later on. It turns out Kylie likes to eat them frozen so no jelly this year.

Those look just lucious. Are they easy to grow?

So far I’ve not had any trouble with them. I tend to keep them in shady spots or spots that only get a few hours of sun per day. I’ve not had any problems yet with either disease or insects and they are fairly easy to start from cuttings. Because of this they usually aren’t too expensive to buy either. I know some states in the US have or had a ban on certain variteites of currants so before I went looking for any you might want to check with your local County Extension agent or something similar if you are around the NE US area.

My black currants are now ready for the picking and I’m in the process of deciding what to do with them…any suggestions?

    Marie,

My boss lived in Scotland for a while and over there they make a drink from black currants that he just raves about. Not sure how to make it but it has something to do with black currant juice lol. I’d be interested in what you end up with. I am growing Red Lake and White Imperial but no blacks yet though I’ve considered it.
